Village Adds Regulations for Donation Drop Boxes for the First Time

The village formerly did not have regulations for donation drop boxes. Now up to three donation drop boxes are permitted for a lot equal to or greater to three acres in size.

If you want to add a donation drop box to your lot, you'll now need to follow these guidelines. 

The village board approved the guidelines at its May 12 meeting. The village formerly did not have regulations for donation drop boxes.

Donation drop boxes are allowed for properties of three or more acres in the B-1 and B-2 districts and properties primarily occupied by an educational, religious, governmental or charitable use.

No more than three donation drop boxes are allowed on a lot. All boxes must be located side-by-side. The boxes must not exceed seven feet in height and 25 square feet in ground area. 

The boxes must have the name and phone number of the owner or operator and language discouraging the placement of items outside of the donation drop box.

The boxes will be located within a parking lot or other paved surface, but not in these locations: 

  • Adjacent to the front facade of the building 
  • 15 feet from the front or exterior side property line 
  • Designated driveway or drive-aisle
  • Five feet from a fire hydrant
  • Designated pedestrian crosswalk
  • Private sidewalk when at least 5 feet of clearance cannot be maintained
  • Any parking space as deemed necessary by the zoning officer 
  • Any public right-of-way 
  • Any parking space as required by title nine of the code or any ordinance or resolution governing the specific development. When a single lot is part of a larger planned development with shared parking, the required parking shall be determined based on the total required parking approved for the entire development
