Naming one of his proudest moments as an educator, Anderson said he once had a composer in residence and when he let students ask questions, a young girl raised her hand and thanked the composer for writing the music the band played because it made them better.

“She was insightful and correct,” Anderson said to SBO.

Anderson is also proud of when students demonstrate “deep musical understanding” and maturity.

But above all, Anderson said he tries to teach students self-confidence and self-worth.

“I want every student that passes through my classroom to know that they are unique and that how they carry and present themselves makes a difference in all aspects of life,” Anderson said.
