Fishers Police Chief Mitch Thompson Resigns After OWI Arrest
Fishers Mayor Scott Fadness issues statement as Police Chief Mitch Thompson sends resignation letter.
FISHERS, IN — Fishers Mayor Scott Fadness announced the resignation of Fishers Police Chief Mitch Thompson on Monday after the law enforcement official was involved in a three-car accident Friday on Keystone Avenue, and was arrested for operating a vehicle while intoxicated. In a statement, Mayor Fadness said he and Chief Thompson met Monday and both agree that Thompson must immediately step down as Chief of Police.
"The events that transpired Friday evening regarding the motor vehicle accident that Chief Thompson was involved in has made his position of leadership untenable," Fadness said in a statement. "In the coming days, Officer Thompson will be subjected to the statutory disciplinary process afforded public safety personnel under the Merit Commission. It is my expectation that this process will be professional, transparent, and judicious. Please keep the victims of the accident as well as our police department in your thoughts and prayers as we move forward."
In an initial statement made Saturday, Mayor Fadness said he placed Thompson on paid administrative leave after the chief notified him Friday night of his arrest and involvement in the Marion County crash.
