Gov. Holcomb Makes Proclamation For Public Safety Telecomm. Week

Governor Holcomb makes a proclamation about Public Safety Telecommunications Week which begins April 8: More

FISHERS, IN -- Governor Eric Holcomb has issued a proclamation for Public Safety Telecommunications Week before it kicks off Sunday, April 8, running through Saturday, April 14. Indiana State Police says Public Safety Telecommunications Week has been recognized statewide since 1999, most commonly by a proclamation from Indiana’s Governor.

Indiana State Police says this coming week reminds all Hoosiers that the first step for getting help is calling 911 and hearing the voice of a public safety dispatcher on the other end, or what ISP calls a two-way life line link that takes calls to serve you.

According to ISP, these are the men and women who get the initial information from you in order to pass along to law enforcement officers out on patrol. ISP adds that whether the 911 call comes from a member of the public, or over a radio from a law enforcement professional, telecommunication operators are one of the most important and under-recognized components of public safety.

These telecommunication operators are often able to give immediate lifesaving directions to the caller during medical emergencies or can be the calming voice to reassure the victim that help is on the way.

Originating in California in 1981, ISP says Public Safety Telecommunications week was nationally recognized by an act of the U.S. Congress in 1991.
