• Extended storm outages, rate hikes heighten frustration with NIPSCO (chicagotribune.com) — Gary residents and local leaders are ramping up pressure on NIPSCO after extended storm outages and rising delivery charges, including a city resolution demanding clearer explanations. At a packed town hall at Trinity Lutheran Church in Gary, lawmakers urged neighbors to testify at a September 29 IURC meeting in Indianapolis and organize caravans to push for utility reforms and more reliable service.
   

• Court news: Guilty plea in dog walker's death, sentence in molesting case (chicagotribune.com) — A Gary man has pleaded guilty but mentally ill to voluntary manslaughter in the 2022 shooting death of an elderly dog walker on West 21st Avenue, and now faces 15 to 30 years if a judge accepts the deal. In a separate case, a Hammond man received a split seven-year sentence for child molesting, with prison time, community corrections, and sex-offender probation.
