📰 News we're reading

1. Tyrese Haliburton Follows Keith Lee's Lead After Gary Storms (heavy.com) — Residents in Gary are still coping with major storm damage and long power outages, but a $30,000 donation from Keith Lee and Pacers star Tyrese Haliburton has boosted local relief. Working with the Salvation Army, they helped distribute meals and cleanup supplies while state and federal officials investigate NIPSCO's response and deploy resources. City leaders say power is slowly returning, but many families still need support.

2. Storm recovery continues in Lake Station and Gary, Indiana more than 2 weeks after severe weather (abc7chicago.com) — Gary residents are slowly returning to normal after the August 11 derecho, with power largely restored but cleanup and restocking still underway. Local grocery Save More Foods is racing to refill shelves after major losses, while state grants, a new federal disaster declaration, and a $2 million NIPSCO contribution are bringing in more aid. Neighbors say the community's support for one another has been remarkable.

3. Gary airport receives final grant for new tower (chicagotribune.com) — Gary/Chicago International Airport has secured the final $8.3 million federal grant needed to build a modern air traffic control tower, with construction expected to start soon and finish by late 2027. The project will replace the aging 1972 tower, bring about 120 skilled trade jobs, and, officials say, help attract more aviation business and economic activity to Gary and Northwest Indiana.

4. World Central Kitchen at Park Shore Commons, Gary (nwitimes.com) — World Central Kitchen and local restaurants are serving more than 15,000 free meals across Gary and Northwest Indiana, including at Park Shore Commons in Miller Beach, to support storm recovery. Partner chefs like House of Garlic's Elie Assaly are preparing dishes such as chicken shawarma wraps for affected residents. These efforts aim to ease food insecurity while neighborhoods rebuild and power issues stabilize.

5. Lost dog reunited with family in Evanston 12 years after disappearing, microchip scanned in Gary (abc7chicago.com) — A Gary animal shelter played a key role in reuniting a long-lost chihuahua with her original family in Evanston, Illinois, 12 years after she disappeared. Staff in Gary scanned Flor's microchip, tracked down her owner, and arranged her return, turning a routine intake into an emotional homecoming that spanned more than a decade and two states.
