📰 News we're reading
1. Fired Gary schools official files federal discrimination suit (chicagotribune.com) — A former Gary Community School Corp. chief operating officer has filed a federal lawsuit accusing the district of racial and sexual discrimination, retaliation and breach of contract after her contract was canceled last year. The case, along with a separate discrimination suit by another employee, could shape how Gary schools handle personnel decisions and equal treatment going forward.

2. Extreme heat takes toll on Gary residents waiting for power (wgntv.com) — Gary residents are still enduring a weeks-long power outage after the August 11 storms, just as dangerous heat makes life especially risky for vulnerable people. One family has gone 23 days without electricity, relying on a borrowed generator, relatives and friends while utility crews warn repairs could take another week and a second nearby home also remains without power.

3. AASHTO Journal - INDOT's 'Project Greenlight' Beefs Up Worker Safety (transportation.org) — Highway workers in Northwest Indiana near Gary are getting new flashing green "Guardian Angel" safety lights as part of INDOT's Project Greenlight, aimed at making crews far more visible to drivers. The program, now expanding statewide, encourages use of the lights at night and in bad weather, potentially improving safety in local work zones you drive through regularly.

4. Predominately Black Community In Indiana Regains Power After Suffering Weeks Without (blackenterprise.com) — Gary residents have finally seen power restored to most of the city after a severe Aug. 11 storm left more than 38,000 homes and businesses in the dark for about two weeks. The outage exposed how aging infrastructure and communication gaps with utility NIPSCO affected this majority-Black community, while a new federal disaster declaration and calls for stronger poles and upgraded transformers aim to better protect Gary from future storms.
