Alzheimer's Screening and Prevention (ASAP) Act

Letter to the Editor

Through continued research, great progress has been made in early detection and diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease, specifically through the introduction of blood biomarker tests. Early detection and diagnosis means early treatment to slow the progression of the disease. Sadly, my mother suffered with this disease for over 10 years. We had to watch as Alzheimer's robbed her of every thought, every memory and sense of self. It was brutal watching her slip away piece by piece, until even her beautiful smile was gone. We lost again when this disease finally took her life. I believe that with early detection and diagnosis we could have alleviated my mother’s suffering. However, it is not too late to help my children and grandchildren, as well as half of the 121,300 Hoosiers living with Alzheimer’s that are not formally diagnosed.

Thankfully, Representative Andre Carson has already played an important role in accelerating access to blood biomarker tests and earlier detection of Alzheimer’s and other dementia in Indiana and across the nation by cosponsoring the Alzheimer’s Screening and Prevention Act. The bipartisan ASAP Act will not only improve patient care but also help facilitate smoother transitions from primary care to specialists, reducing the burden on health care workers and helping to streamline the health care system.

Please join me and the Alzheimer’s Association in thanking Representative Andre Carson for supporting the bipartisan Alzheimer’s Screening and Prevention (ASAP) Act. This will make a difference in our fight for a world without Alzheimer’s. ENDALZ#
