📰 News we're reading

1. Carmel sewage could flow downriver to Indy. Here's why. (mirrorindy.org) — Indianapolis residents are being warned that raw sewage from a damaged Carmel wastewater main could flow down the White River into local waterways after recent historic flooding, though drinking water is expected to remain safe. Citizens Energy Group outlines how it will monitor and treat river water, explains why the DigIndy tunnel doesn't prevent flooding, and urges Marion County residents to conserve water and report high-water issues.

2. More than half of Marion County's floodgates closed during historic flooding (wthr.com) — More than half of Marion County's floodgates were closed across Indianapolis during recent historic flooding on the White River to protect homes and businesses. City engineers describe how these long-overlooked gates work, including one by the Indianapolis Art Center, and say they're still assessing performance and any potential failures as water levels recede.

3. Judge sentences man to 65 years for Christmas Day 2024 murder (wishtv.com) — A Marion Superior Court judge has sentenced an Indianapolis man to 65 years in state prison for a fatal shooting during a Christmas Day 2024 gathering on Kitley Avenue. Police say a brief argument inside the home escalated when the shooter threatened to kill the victim and fired once, leading to a bench-trial conviction for murder and firearm charges.

4. See flood damage at Indy Art Center ArtsPark (indystar.com) — White River flooding has soaked parts of the Indy Art Center's ArtsPark in Indianapolis, damaging children's art supplies and nearby rental spaces, but the main building remains unharmed and open. Cleanup crews are working around the riverside campus, where sculptures, decks, and paths are being inspected and cleared while high water slowly recedes.

5. Expert urges Indiana officials to rebuild roadways to withstand more frequent and severe floods (fox59.com) — Flooding has washed out parts of River Road just south of 96th Street in Indianapolis, and city crews still don't know how extensive the damage is or how long repairs will take. Experts from Purdue and IU Indianapolis are urging state and local officials to rebuild washed-out roads and bridges across Indiana, including in Indy, to withstand increasingly frequent and severe floods instead of simply restoring the old designs.
