Firefighter Injured, Woman Dead After Indianapolis House Fire

Indianapolis Fire Department says a firefighter was injured and a woman was killed in a house fire: PHOTOS

INDIANAPOLIS, IN -- One person is dead after a fire broke out in an Indianapolis home, Indianapolis Fire Department officials say. IFD says a passerby called crews to the house on 3822 N. Capitol Avenue just after 2:15 a.m. Thursday and showed up to heavy fire showing from the front of the home.

Firefighters say a women was found after the went into the home and was taken to Eskenazi Hospital in critical condition. Neighbors told fire crews the women was in her 90's, and although she had a pulse at the hospital, she later died. IFD says it's unclear right now whether there were working smoke detectors in the house.

An IFD firefighter was injured during the rescue and was taken to Methodist Hospital with a twisted knee.

Battalion Chief Rick Longerich says damage from the fire is estimated at $80,000.

IFD says the cause of the fire is under investigation, and IMPD Homicide will work with fire investigators as normal.

IFD officials note there have been 40 structure fires so far this month, and this is the fourth fatality in the IFD Service District for 2018.
