IMPD Officers Cleared Of Wrongdoing In Aaron Bailey Case

IMPD Civilian Merit Board votes 5-2 to clear Carlton Howard and Michel Dinnsen of any wrongdoing in Aaron Bailey fatal shooting case: More

INDIANAPOLIS, IN — Two Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers involved in the June 2017 shooting death of Aaron Bailey will keep their jobs as the IMPD Civilian Merit Board decided to clear them of all potential violations Thursday in a 5-2 vote, WXIN reports. The two officers shot 45-year-old Bailey after a traffic stop on June 29 when Bailey crashed after leading police on a chase, WXIN reports. The news source adds that the officers said they thought Bailey had reached into the car to get a weapon, although he was unarmed and no weapons were found.

Patch reported in November that nearly one week after a prosecutor announced there would be no criminal charges filed against Howard and Dinnsen, IMPD officials announced a the two had been suspended from their duties, as part of a separate internal, administrative decision in the case. In addition, IMPD Chief Bryan Roach recommended their termination to the Civilian Police Merit Board.

During the three-day hearing, officers Carlton Howard and Michel Dinnsen called for better training from IMPD in efforts to prevent this sort of shooting from happening again.
