IPS Short Of Its Retirement Goal With 87 Teachers Accepting Offer

87 retiring teachers will get their $20,000 payments from Indianapolis Public Schools as the district plans for what's next: Report

INDIANAPOLIS, IN — A retirement buyout goal recently announced by Indianapolis Public Schools has come up a bit short, as 87 of the necessary 100 to 150 educators have accepted the $20,000 retirement plan, Chalkbeat reports. Although fewer teachers volunteered to retire at the end of the year than what was needed, Chalkbeat says the IPS administration will go forward with the plan.

Nearly 250 teachers were eligible for the retirement offer and needed to notify the district by April 20 if they planned to retire at the end of the school year.

The news report says the district emailed teachers Monday, notifying them that the agreement was approved and they would receive the payments.

Chalkbeat reports that it will cost the district $1.74 million to pay 87 teachers $20,000 each, but some teachers may not be replaced which could save IPS some money. However, if the administration isn't able to save enough with other cuts, including $22.4 million from next year's budget, the district may decide to lay off teachers.
