Kohl's Invests In Smaller Format Stores, Opens Local Fulfillment Center

PLAINFIELD, IN — Kohl's has announced plans to invest in a number of small format store locations, and heighten capabilities at the company's fifth e-commerce center, located in Plainfield, according to a release. Kohl's reports it will open four small format, 35,000-square-foot stores in Oct. 2017, which will add to the company's eight small format stores opened in 2016, including one in Greenfield. According to the company, the new small format stores will be located in North Smithfield, Rhode Island, Blue Ash, Ohio, East Windsor, New Jersey and Montebello, California.

According to a release, 300 Kohl's stores have new interior layouts, and nearly half of Kohl's stores will be operationally smaller by the end of 2017, in efforts to enhance customer experience and store profitability.

Kohl's opened its 937,000-square-foot, fifth e-commerce fulfillment center in Plainfield this month, where Kohls.com orders are processed, filled and shipped out. “Our stores remain at the core of our omnichannel strategy and we will continue to invest in them by opening smaller formats, rightsizing and optimizing our selling space and working to ensure that shopping in our stores is an engaging and inspiring experience for our customers,” Kevin Mansell, Kohl’s chairman, chief executive officer and president, said in a release. “We have set a goal to be the best-in-class omnichannel retailer and opening our fifth e-commerce distribution center will support the delivery of online orders faster and more efficiently to customers nationwide.”

All Kohl's store locations nationwide fulfill and ship online orders, and are also pick-up locations for those who choose to grab their orders in store.

The company said these new investments and enhancements will improve Kohl's store base of more than 1,100 stores throughout 49 states.
