Residents will have chances to weigh in as proposed zoning changes move through hearings.

2. Southern Indiana congresswoman hopes to remove barriers to higher education for homeless, foster youth (wave3.com) — In Jeffersonville, local nonprofit Family Arc is backing a federal bill aimed at making college more accessible for homeless and foster youth, including better housing options, in-state tuition access, and campus support staff. Congresswoman Erin Houchin’s proposal, co-sponsored by lawmakers from other states, could directly affect vulnerable young people served by Jeffersonville organizations if it advances.

3. Four-foot alligator surprises early-morning commuter near downtown Jeffersonville (wbiw.com) — An early-morning commuter near downtown Jeffersonville came face-to-face with a 4.5-foot alligator, which local police safely captured without injuries. Residents are reminded not to approach exotic animals and to call police or wildlife officers instead.

4. ‘Reduce risk and increase confidence': Jeffersonville Police Department gets new training simulator (wave3.com) — Jeffersonville police officers are now training on a new 180-degree simulator, bought with a federal grant, to sharpen decision-making and marksmanship in realistic scenarios. The system lets multiple officers practice more than 1,000 situations year-round indoors, and Jeffersonville staff are even building custom scenarios based on local practices. SWAT is already using it, and more officers will begin training on it this fall.
