A number of community groups will join together to “March to the Polls” on Saturday, Oct. 24, one of two days citizens can vote on Saturday as part of Indiana’s early voting laws. The other Saturday citizens can cast their vote is Oct. 31.

People interested in marching to vote early at a Saturday vote center should meet on the North Wheeling Avenue Fallen HeroesBridge at 1 p.m. Starting at 1:30 p.m., one group will march to the Delaware County Fairgrounds to vote, and the other group will march to the Delaware County Building. Both of these locations are Saturday early voting sites.

The march is a nonpartisan event. Participants are asked not to carry or display any signage or dress affiliated with specific candidates and/or political parties as they are not permitted inside vote centers.

Signs that support democracy and the right to vote are welcome, but they will not be allowed inside vote centers.

Organizing the “March to the Polls” are the League of Women Voters of Muncie-Delaware County and Muncie Resists. Other groups have been invited to participate. They include neighborhood associations, NAACP, Muncie Black Expo, the YWCA Central Indiana and others.

Linda Hanson, president of the Indiana League of Women Voters and the spokesperson for the local Muncie-Delaware County League, said, “The Rev. Bishop William Barber calls on us to make our voices heard at the voting booth. His ‘1,000 Marchs to the Polls’ drive is mobilizing voters across the country to organize nonviolent and nonpartisan marches to the polls. We want Muncie and Delaware County citizens to play a part in answering the reverend’s call to vote.”

The League, since its founding in 1920, strives to empower voters and defend democracy through advocacy, education, and litigation at the local, state and national levels.
In addition, the League never supports or opposes political parties or candidates. Instead, it takes positions on issues that affect voters. Positions might align with a party or a candidate at times but diverge at other times. The League’s focus is always on policies and measures that serve the public interest – not party affiliation.
The League of Women Voters Education Fund and local leagues work to register and inform voters through the election resources of VOTE411.org , and candidate forums.
People of all different governing beliefs are eligible to join local chapters of the League of Women Voters. No invitation is needed.
