📰 News we're reading

• Judge denies man's request to dismiss charges in 1994 attempted murder case (chicagotribune.com) — A Porter Superior Court judge has refused to dismiss decades-old attempted murder and resisting law enforcement charges against Fred R. Pewitt, clearing the way for a long-delayed trial in Porter County. After finishing a separate sentence, Pewitt is now held in Porter County Jail on bond while attorneys prepare for a trial date that must be set within 180 days.

• A Portage Life in the Spotlight: Dawn Wolf (greatnews.life) — Community volunteer Dawn Wolf has played a key role in expanding family housing through Family Promise of Porter County, helping keep local families together during homelessness. She also supports Portage schools and children through the Kiwanis Club and helps organize major Portage events like parades and holiday celebrations, keeping strong ties to the area even after moving to Valparaiso.

• These upcoming Indiana tax deadlines are extended due to historic flooding (bluewaterhealthyliving.com) — Porter County residents hit by August's flooding now have until Feb. 1, 2027, to file certain state and federal tax returns and payments, including quarterly estimates. The extension is automatic and covers individuals, businesses, nonprofits, and corporations in the disaster-declared counties. If you still receive a penalty notice, you're advised to call the number listed to have it voided.
