Pastor Mario Sims' church has long sheltered and supported unhoused neighbors, but the cost of major repairs now exceeds what members can manage alone, so they're asking nearby residents to consider helping keep this community hub open.
   

2. Suspect in Eddy Street Commons shooting turns self in (abc57.com) — A South Bend 19-year-old has turned himself in after a September 19 shooting at Eddy Street Commons that injured a teen girl and a South Bend police officer near Notre Dame. Prosecutors have filed felony battery and criminal recklessness charges, and officials say both victims are expected to fully recover as the suspect heads to court October 21.

Penn boys soccer clinches NIC title with OT win over Mishawaka Marian (southbendtribune.com) — Penn boys soccer just clinched the Northern Indiana Conference title with an overtime win at Mishawaka Marian, setting up a key sectional matchup at Elkhart next week. For South Bend fans, Adams' earlier league win over Penn still looms large in the standings, as NIC rivals now turn toward sectional brackets that include several familiar area powers.
   

4. Microsoft Shrivels When Asked If Its 'Good Neighbor' Data Center Policy Will Involve Actually Supporting Community Groups (futurism.com) — Community organizers based in South Bend say Microsoft's promised "good neighbor" support around its massive nearby data center has so far amounted to small, one-time donations instead of meaningful, ongoing investment. We Make Indiana argues that generous tax abatements for the $1 billion project shortchange local residents, especially in a city where more than one in five people live below the poverty line and rely on underfunded services.
