Peate joined the City as outreach director in March 2013. She developed and managed the South Bend Youth Task Force (SBYTF), an advocacy group that gives youth an opportunity to engage with the community and city government. The Youth Task Force achieved national recognition, and members participated in the 2019 U.S. Conference of Mayors Youth Summit in Los Angeles. In partnership with Beacon Health System, Peate led South Bend’s My Brother’s Keeper Community Challenge, which has served more than 14,000 young people in the area.
“I want to thank Cherri for her years of outstanding service to the South Bend community,” said Mayor Pete Buttigieg. “She has been a key and trusted member of the City’s leadership team, and her leadership on several important issues has made South Bend a better place. I congratulate her on her many achievements in public service, and we all wish her continued success in her next chapter.”

“It has been a great honor to serve the residents of my hometown,” said Peate. “I am humbled and grateful to the community for their continued support throughout the years. I have grown tremendously as a public servant and I thank Mayor Pete for trusting me to serve in such an important role. Witnessing the everyday hard work that my colleagues and community partners put in to serving the people of South Bend has been such an inspiration. I thank them for being an example of what it means to be a dedicated public servant.”
