Dog-Eared Books' midnight release for 'Threshing Day' (iowastatedaily.com) — Dog-Eared Books in Ames is throwing a free late-night release party for Rebecca Yarros' new Empyrean companion book, "Threshing Day," starting Monday at 11 p.m. and rolling past midnight into Tuesday. Fans can enjoy trivia, a costume contest, snacks, specialty drinks, photo ops, and a personality-style activity with prizes, plus discounted preorders and pickup of the new book and others in the series.
   

2. Ames establishes 15-member data center study committee (amestrib.com) — Ames officials have created a 15-member volunteer committee to study the environmental impacts of data centers before deciding on a controversial Lightedge proposal. With more than 50 residents applying, the group will research heat, wildlife, and health effects and deliver findings to the Ames City Council by March, shaping future zoning and regulations that could affect nearby neighborhoods.
   

3. Ames man arrested on sexual exploitation and bestiality charges (who13.com) — An Ames man has been charged with multiple counts of sexual exploitation of a minor and bestiality after investigators linked him to child sexual abuse material shared online while he was an Iowa State University student living on campus. He was jailed on $150,000 bond, later reduced to $72,000 cash-only, and a preliminary hearing is set for October 5. Authorities say the investigation began with a national cyber tip and involved seizure of his electronic devices.
   

4. 'Iowa Weird Vol. 2' brings Iowa's strange stories to Ames (iowastatedaily.com) — Ames readers can dive into Iowa's eeriest tales when Hayseed Press brings its new anthology, "Iowa Weird Vol. 2," to Dog-Eared Books on Oct. 15 at 6 p.m. The event will feature spooky stories rooted in Iowa history, including one by retired Ames City Attorney Mark Lambert, plus chances for signings and discussion with contributors.
   

5. Iowa Man Sentenced In Local, Federal Child Exploitation Cases (thenews-gazette.com) — An Ames man has been sentenced to 20 years in Virginia state prison and 27 additional years in federal prison for online child exploitation cases involving a decoy in Rockbridge County and a real minor victim in Iowa. Authorities say he coerced explicit images from the Iowa victim and tried to arrange illegal encounters online, and they're urging parents to stay vigilant about children's internet use.
