From tracing and power-drill gutting to final carving and placement, Iowa State students and community members are pitching in, with even a pumpkin smash planned in partnership with Student Health and Wellness.

2. CenturyLink copper land line service to end in 20 Iowa communities (ottumwaradio.com) — CenturyLink will shut off traditional copper land line service in Ames and 19 other Iowa communities on October 18, affecting a remaining group of analog phone users. The company is pushing customers toward internet-based phone service, while some complain they didn't receive the legally required advance notice of the change.

3. Iowa's candidates for governor split over education savings accounts (iowapublicradio.org) — Education savings accounts are emerging as a key issue for Ames-area voters as gubernatorial candidates Zach Lahn and Rob Sand pitch sharply different visions for school funding and oversight. At recent campaign stops, including Sand's event in Ames, residents voiced concerns about ESA expansion, accountability for public dollars going to private schools, and how these choices could affect their children's educational opportunities and Iowa's strained budget.

4. How Tyrese Haliburton's connection with Ivica Zubac will be 'a lot of fun' (vcstar.com) — A preseason Indiana Pacers game on the Iowa State campus in Ames gave fans a first look at Tyrese Haliburton and Ivica Zubac finally sharing the court. Haliburton, back from injury and playing at his alma mater, is quickly building a fast-paced pick-and-roll connection with Zubac that both believe will only improve as the season approaches.
