Who Should Be the Next Mayor of Ankeny?

In just over three weeks, Ankeny's Mayor Steven Van Oort will officially resign to take his spot on the Polk County Board of Supervisors.

Which begs a very good question – who will fill his seat when he does?

There are several ways the vacancy can be filled. The Ankeny City Council has 45 days from the date of resignation, which is Dec. 7, to appoint a replacement. It also has 90 days to call for a special election and set a date.

Council members had not formally discussed a plan for the open seat last week, but the consensus the day after the election was to appoint someone to the position, according to the Des Moines Register.

Gary Lorenz, a former council member, also told the Register he had been approached by Van Oort to fill the position and would be open to it if the opportunity arose.
