Laura M. Forgie: Skins of Carnage
The opening reception for Skins of Carnage, a solo exhibition by multi-media artist Laura M. Forgie, was held on Friday, April 19th, 2013, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at The Space gallery, 109 East 2nd Street, in downtown Cedar Falls, IA. The exhibition is on display until May 19th and is free and open to the public, although donations are greatly appreciated.
Forgie received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Northern Iowa, in 2011, and is currently working as an artist out of her home in Cedar Falls. Forgie has exhibited throughout Iowa and the Midwest, most recently at the Annual After X-mas Art Auction (AAxAA) at Public Space One in Iowa City, IA.
The exhibition consists of four new works on acrylic gel medium in the form of large “banners” suspended from fishing line and dowel rods. The imagery of which depicts naturally expired animals abstracted in ways that challenge the viewers’ perception of death and violence. Also included in the show are three older works on plastic acrylic sheets which possess imagery similar to that of the new “skin banners” as well as a small assortment of multi-media works such as altered books.
Segment from the artist’s statement: "I wished to express the unspeakable violence and carnage which seems inexplicably inherent to human-kind as a tool of manipulation and an antidote to shame and humiliation, as well as an act of survival through mere primal instincts. The looming presence of death within the pieces serves as a reminder of the mortality of life. In my current body of work I explore the manipulation of materials to further articulate the fragility of our being."
