Overfed and Undernourished: Health and Wellness Blog

Did you know that Americans consume on average 610 calories/day more than they did 20 years ago AND fall short in getting enough critical nutrients needed for a long, healthy life?

According to Shaklee, Americans consume on average 610 calories/day more than they did 20 years ago AND fall short in getting enough critical nutrients needed for a long, healthy life.

More than 80 percent of Americans have inadequate vitamin D blood levels, and vitamin D is needed for calcium absorption and to prevent osteomalacia (a softening of bones in adults).

About half of adults don't get enough vitamin C, which plays a role in immune function. One of the first signs of poor vitamin C status is low energy.

Two-thirds of adults don't get enough magnesium, an essential mineral needed for more than 300 biochemical reactions in the body. Magnesium helps maintain normal muscle and nerve function, keeps normal heart rhythm steady, supports a healthy immune system, and keeps bones strong.

We can start consuming healthier fast foods: fresh fruits and vegetables for extra vitamin C, a handful of nuts for the vitamin E and magnesium you may be missing, an extra glass of low-fat/nonfat milk to get more calcium and vitamin D, and replace white bread with whole grain to help boost fiber intake. While you're working toward that goal, take a comprehensive multivitamin/multimineral supplement every day to help fill your nutrient gaps!

When I first started making these changes, I felt overwhelmed. I do not like many fruits, I prefer veggies with sauce, I do not want to stop at a handful of nuts, and I do not like milk – luckily I do like the taste of whole grains, and I have taken a multivitamin most of my life. Just as I mentor my organizing clients, I had to remember to take baby steps, one-at-a-time. I discovered that I liked fruit and milk blended in my protein shake, enjoy seasoned veggies without sauce, and a handful of nuts actually does satisfy me if I give it time to reach my stomach :).

What one step will you take this week?
