The bees have arrived at Hartman! (Blog)

Hartman staff and volunteers rescued honey bees and brought them to Hartman Reserve for educational purposes.

On Sunday, April 14th some of the staff from Hartman Reserve Nature Center and 2 volunteers performed a "cut-out" on a feral hive of bees from a garage in Cedar Falls that is set for demolition. A cut-out is the term given to removing a hive from a man made structure or hollw tree and placing them in a man made hive.  After removing the bees and the comb they were placed into a Warré top-bar hive and transported to Hartman Reserve Nature Center.

The bees will be used in educational programs for school children and the general public.  There are also plans to start a fall honey festival once the hive is fully established and producing strongly.  Other hives will be added in the future when the staff is able to perform other cut-outs and/or capture swarms.  If you know of feral hives, or see a swarm please contact Program Coordinator, Chris Anderson at 319-277-2187 or chris.hrnc@gmail.com.
