What is summer without a little traveling? That means sitting still in a car or plane for an extended amount of time while waiting to arrive at your destination of choice. Traveling can be challenging if you have knee pain. Let’s face it, we aren't designed to be seated in tight cramped car/plane seats. Try these tips to make your journey a more comfortable and enjoyable one despite having knee pain.
If You're Flying...
Sitting in those tight cramped seats in coach can aggravate pain in the knee because of how restricted your legs are. Get off your feet whenever you can to do simple stretching and get the blood flowing. Picking an aisle seat in advance will benefit you and everyone else on the plane as it will make it easier for you to get up multiple times during your flight. Put less stress on your knees by making sure you only use rolling luggage. Unless you’re flying business or first class, you should definitely heed this advice.

If You're Driving...
Get someone to do the driving for you on longer journeys. Driving in a car and having your legs in the same position can lessen blood flow, bring about numbness and pain. If you have to drive, do give your knees a break by stopping at rest stops to take a good stretch or just a walkabout. Having your car on cruise control can also be an option, if you have that luxury!

Brace Yourself
Once you've reached your vacation destination, you are more than likely to want to not waste any time and start exploring. Wear a knee brace to give your knees the extra support it needs. The brace will help compensate for weak or damaged ligaments and cartilage by stabilizing the knee cap. If you're the adventurous sort, don't exert yourself too much. Know your limits by listening to your body, the last thing you want is to hurt yourself and ruin the rest of your vacation plans.
Exercise Regularly
Building up stronger muscles in your legs will help your knees in the long run. Do leg lifts and squats to help stabilize the knee the same way a knee brace would. It would help to start an exercise program several months before your trip.
