As part of an Iowa book tour, poet, Bridgette Bates’, will visit UNI and give a poetry reading at the UNI Center for Multicultural Education (CME) on November 5th at 3:30pm. Bates’ book, What Is Not Missing Is Light, winner of Rescue Press’ Black Box Poetry Prize, takes us inside a museum to view fragments of ancient female statues that have survived centuries of destruction. More immediately, the poems engage us because they explore the female body as survivor— with recent news of nude photo hackings and politics of the female body her message is urgent.

Bates is the recipient of a Fulbright Fellowship and a “Discovery” Prize, she is a graduate of the University of Iowa Writers’ Workshop. The reading is free and open to the public.
