📰 News we're reading

1. QC teen to be tried as adult on gang, weapons and eluding charges (kwqc.com) — Davenport readers should know that a Quad Cities teen is being moved to adult court on charges tied to a high‑speed chase in Scott County and an earlier 2025 shooting incident on East Locust Street. Court records say Davenport Police and the Scott County Sheriff's Office linked him to alleged gang‑related activity and recovered a stolen handgun and marijuana.

2. August 17 recap: Quad-Cities news you may have missed today (qconline.com subscription) — Davenport leaders this week will weigh a first reading to allow tattoo shops in the Village, a change that could open new business options for local artists and entrepreneurs. The broader Quad-Cities recap also notes Eldridge's fire department vote, a partial building collapse in East Moline, and several other regional updates residents may have missed.

3. Shriners across the Midwest coming to the Quad Cities this week (wqad.com) — Shriners from across the Midwest are heading to Davenport this week for the Central States Shrine Association Ceremonial Session, including a big public parade through downtown on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. Expect colorful units, special vehicles, and visiting shrine centers, plus related activities like a pub crawl and golf outing based around the Quad Cities.

4. Iowa dioceses create scholarship-granting organization for federal tax credit program (therecordnewspaper.org) — Families connected to Davenport's Catholic schools could see new scholarship help starting in 2027, thanks to a statewide Iowa Catholic scholarship‑granting organization tied to a new federal tax credit. The program is designed to supplement existing ESAs and STOs, which Diocese of Davenport schools already fully use, and may especially benefit border‑area schools that serve out‑of‑state students currently ineligible for Iowa aid.

5. Lavey wants to win, capitalize on memorable debut with TinCaps (journalgazette.net) — A promising Padres catching prospect, Robbie Lavey, launched a home run in his very first professional at-bat, which came in Davenport against the Quad Cities River Bandits. The story follows his long wait after the draft, his strong early performance, and how he's trying to establish himself while the TinCaps battle through a hectic schedule and fading playoff hopes.
