1. Local songwriter Simon Cropp helps kick off the second annual Iowa City Songwriters Festival (dailyiowan.com) — Decorah songwriter Simon Cropp brought folk songs and between-song stories to an intimate Iowa City Songwriters Festival opening-night show Nov. 5. Performing at The Black Angel, he drew on country and bluegrass influences and traded jokes with listeners. Cropp said smaller settings help audiences connect with emerging artists and their songwriting. 
2. Report from Decorah Police Department (nhtrib.com) — A Calmar woman faces charges after police investigated stolen lottery tickets at Casey’s on Old Stage Road in Decorah. Police say Trisha Kountkofsky, 43, redeemed one stolen ticket for $500. She turned herself in Nov. 2 and faces two fraudulent-redemption counts and an enhanced theft charge. The allegations remain unproven.
3. Josh Turek Makes Surprise Appearance at Luther (lutherchips.com) — Before winning Iowa’s U.S. Senate race, Josh Turek made a surprise stop at Luther College’s Preus Library to meet students and Decorah residents. The Oct. 15 visit, organized by Luther Democrats, gave attendees half an hour with the candidate, who discussed housing costs, health care and keeping young people in Iowa.
4. Men's Cross Country Takes Second at Luther Saga Cup (blugolds.com) — Luther College finished fourth among five men's cross-country teams at Friday's Saga Cup in Decorah, while top-ranked Wartburg took the title. UW-Eau Claire placed second with 51 points behind Wartburg's 15, led by Cooper Wittek's 26:46.7 finish.
5. Appearance in Oelwein (iowa.gov) — Job seekers can get resume help, practice interviews and one-on-one career assistance when IowaWORKS brings its Mobile Workforce Center to Oelwein on November 19. The visit runs from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at 137 S. Frederick Ave., with information available through the Decorah IowaWORKS office.
