Iowa Finance Authority Awards More Than $6.4 Million to Expand Housing and Support Services for Iowans Experiencing or at Risk of Homelessness (rcreader.com) — More than $4.4 million in federal HOME-ARP funds is headed to Des Moines to convert a former hotel at East 14th and Euclid into 32 affordable homes for women overcoming homelessness, addiction, or incarceration. The Iowa Finance Authority's award supports housing development, services, and nonprofit operations, while a separate Dubuque project shares the remaining funds. This investment aims to expand stable housing and support for vulnerable neighbors.

Des Moines asks for public input on Greenwood Park improvements (kcci.com) — Des Moines residents are being asked to help shape the future of Greenwood Park, one of the city's oldest green spaces, by sharing ideas for new features and uses. With no city funding yet allocated, officials plan to rely on grants and fundraising, making a clear community vision essential. You can complete the city's questionnaire with your suggestions through October 28.

Lotto America jackpot ticket sold at Des Moines gas station (who13.com) — A winning Lotto America jackpot ticket worth millions was sold at the QuikTrip on SW 63rd Street in Des Moines, and the store will get a $5,000 bonus. The jackpot winner can choose between a $6.14 million annuity or $2.53 million cash. Lottery officials also highlight how game proceeds support Iowa veterans and families of fallen public safety workers.
4. The Drive: Female kickers stealing the show in Iowa yet again (weareiowa.com) — A senior at Des Moines Lincoln High School, Coralee Bucklin, is making history as the first female to score points for all Des Moines Public Schools, while Simpson College freshman Jasmine Bisping is breaking ground as a collegiate kicker. Both athletes describe how supportive coaches and teammates helped them thrive in a male-dominated sport. Their success is normalizing female kickers on Iowa football fields.

Central Iowa veteran receives surprise homecoming after Honor Flight (who13.com) — A central Iowa veteran was greeted with a surprise celebration at Des Moines International Airport after returning from an Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. Family, friends, and former colleagues honored 61-year-old Paul Tieszen's 41 years of military service, offering support as he faces serious health challenges and may receive further recognition in Washington early next year.
