Des Moines Police searching for missing juvenile at risk of exploitation (who13.com) — Des Moines police are asking residents to help locate 17-year-old Luz Haidee, who voluntarily left her west-side home and may be traveling with an adult man she met on TikTok. Investigators say she could be at risk of exploitation and released photos plus details of a Dodge Ram 2500 with a Maryland plate starting with 2209; anyone who spots them should call 911 immediately.
   

2. Merlyn Linn, creator of Linn's Haunted House, dies at age 88 (who13.com) — Des Moines is mourning Merlyn Linn, the 88-year-old founder of Linn's Haunted House and longtime local grocer who turned his supermarket basement into a beloved Halloween tradition. Despite his death and past challenges like pandemic rules and a 2024 fire, the haunted house plans to reopen October 2, continuing a spooky staple for metro families.
   

3. How housing supply and affordability compare (evanstonnow.com) — Des Moines tops a new Realtor.com ranking for housing supply and affordability, with strong new construction and home prices slightly below Chicago's despite similar household incomes. The study finds Des Moines building nearly twice as many homes as expected for its size, keeping the price gap between new and existing houses relatively modest compared with the Chicago region and other big metros.
   

4. Faith and Freedom Coalition rallies Iowa Republicans ahead of November election (wowt.com) — More than 1,200 Republicans gathered in Des Moines for the Faith and Freedom Coalition banquet, where Gov. Kim Reynolds and other GOP leaders urged strong turnout in November to protect recent tax and property reforms. Speakers, including Sen. John Kennedy, framed the election as pivotal for Iowa's direction, pushing attendees to ignore discouraging polls and focus on mobilizing voters.

What your neighbors are talking about on social media

  • Well for all that craziness of get copies of a photo of him at Walgreens then going to Price Chopper to get copies of him that were in black and white (30 of them) printed , then the library to get copies of him(30 of them) so that was 60 copies
    that were in color cause it shows his colors better then tacking them up then calling his name ALL over the neighborhood even talking to mailman blah… (Nextdoor Beaverdale)
