📰 News we're reading

1. Board-approved $8M credit line gives Iowa City CSD a cash-flow bridge (press-citizen.com) — Iowa City families should know the school board has approved an $8 million credit line to ensure the district can meet payroll before state funding arrives in October. The anticipatory warrant from Hills Bank acts as a short-term cash bridge, not new long-term debt, and follows earlier budget shortfalls and ongoing efforts to cut millions in spending.

2. Chace Ramey addresses response to Iowa City school finance issues (nonpareilonline.com) — Iowa City school leaders have approved an $8 million backup loan and cut $7.5 million in spending, including 23 teaching positions, as they work through serious financial missteps that nearly jeopardized payroll. Former assistant superintendent Chace Ramey, now in Council Bluffs, is addressing what he knew, while the district faces possible state intervention and even future school closures.

3. LaVerne Miller (mississippivalleypublishing.com) — Iowa City is remembering LaVerne J. Miller, a 101-year-old resident who moved here later in life to be near her son Steven and his family. Her funeral will be held Sept. 12 in Burlington, and memorials are suggested to support fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva research or Bird House Hospice of Johnson County, honoring her decades of devoted caregiving.

4. Marion man accused of using glass bottle as a weapon during Iowa City mobile home brawl (1630kcjj.com) — Residents near Lake Ridge in Iowa City may have noticed a heavy law enforcement response after a late-night fight last Sunday, where a Marion man allegedly struck another person with a glass bottle. Deputies say video showed him as the primary aggressor, and he now faces assault, disorderly conduct, and public intoxication charges that could bring more than a year in jail.

5. Plea deal reached in case of Iowa City man accused of choking child to the point of required medical intubation (1630kcjj.com) — Iowa City readers should know a plea deal has been reached for a local man accused of choking a child at the Town & Campus Apartments so severely she needed medical intubation. Police say the June incident happened in front of two of his children, and while exact plea terms aren't public, sentencing is scheduled for October 19.
