Pres. Obama Says He's for Net Neutrality, But Is His FCC Chairman?

Pres. Obama says he supports net neutrality, but his FCC Chairman is Tom Wheeler, a telecom exec who ponied up $500,000 for Obama's campaign

President Obama recently stated that he is for net neutrality and believes the internet should be regulated like a utility. He says that knowing that the decision whether to regulate the internet like a utility (a utility like landline phone service, water, gas, and electricity) is not up to him. The decision is up to the FCC Chairman, Tom Wheeler, who is the former anti-net neutrality telecom lobbyist who, together with his friends and colleagues, ponied up $500,000 for Obama’s 2012 presidential campaign. The decision is also up to the Supreme Court. AT & T and Verizon have already said they’ll sue if the internet is ruled to be a common carrier, a utility. Verizon and AT & T spend more money on anti-net neutrality lobbying than any other companies by far.

So Pres. Obama can posture as pro-net neutrality, but he knows the FCC will do what it wants, and he knows who he appointed to be FCC Chairman. This way he can say the right thing and get credit for it while knowing that the decision is really out of his hands.

He won’t get credit from me unless net neutrality actually remains sacrosanct, and I doubt it will. Our government is too corrupted by corporate influence for that outcome to be likely.

When the Democratic National Committee asked me to thank Pres. Obama after the Nov. 4, 2014 election and tell him I have his back, I wrote a long email telling the DNC why I wouldn’t thank Pres. Obama and why their email shows how clueless they are about the election.

Pres. Obama dragged the Democratic ticket down and corporate money talked. Not only is Pres. Obama bought and paid for, so is most of Congress.
