Health & Fitness

Baby, it's cold outside

Working out in cold weather.

We were spoiled this fall. I got to walk a mile outside on my break at work nearly every day. It was great for my weight loss. In fact, in October I had my best weight loss of one week - 3.5 pounds! I attributed it to walking a mile every single day of work that week.

Now things are slowing down as the temperature dips. My doctor indicated that if I continue to just calorie-count that I will plateau soon (meaning, I'll stop losing weight if that's all I keep doing). He stressed I should work out every day.

So, my fiance and I got a gym membership at Planet Fitness in Urbandale. It opens... today, actually. I won't advertise one gym over another, so do your own research to find what is right for you and your situation. Most area YMCA's, for example, have some nice swimming facilities. Anytime Fitness is open 24 hours (hence the name) for those late-night athletes. We liked this one for various reasons, but cost was a big one.

However, don't let the cold weather scare you. One night we bundled up and went for a run at 9 p.m. In fact, I like running in colder weather because I don't sweat buckets. Also, if I'm cold I work harder to get warm faster. Same thing goes for my walks at work. If it isn't raining, I'm still trying to get outside for a lap around the building, bundled up in my coat (don't want to get sick).

What do you do to stay active in the cold months?
