Don't Trash Your Pumpkin, Compost It!

You can compost your pumpkin with your yard waste.

Return Your Jack-O-Lantern to the Ground after Halloween

After you hand out the Halloween candy and put away the costumes, you will need to dispose of your pumpkin. But wait, if you usually throw it in the trash, you will want to switch it up this year. Pumpkins can actually go to the curb with your yard waste in the Compost It! program.

Pumpkins can be tossed in a Compost It! cart or bag, or store-brand bag with a Compost It! sticker, right along with leaves and brush. Rotten vegetables or garden waste can also be included. However, if the veggies have touched your plate, then they need to go in the garbage.

  1. If the pumpkin is in good shape, clean out the inside and use it as a flower vase or an appetizer dish.
  2. Eat it! Pumpkin seeds make a healthy, yummy snack, and the pumpkin itself can be used to bake fall treats.
  3. If the pumpkin is decomposing, you can break it up, and bury it in your yard or garden to add rich nutrients to the ground.
