Library Blog: Tax Help at the Library

Here at the library we have called in reinforcements to make tax season as easy as possible for you.

It’s that time of year again—time to gather your records and prepare your taxes. Here at the library we have called in reinforcements to make this process as easy as possible for you. AARP tax counselors will be here on Tuesdays and Saturdays beginning February 4th through April 14 for free tax assistance.

AARPFoundation Tax-Aide, an AARP Foundation program, helps low- to-moderate-income taxpayers have more discretionary income for everyday essentials, such as food and housing, by assisting with tax services and ensuring tax payers receive applicable tax credits and deductions. AARP tax assistance at Johnston Library is by appointment only this year; AARP tax preparers will not be accepting walk-ins at this location. Tax preparers will be at the library on Tuesdays from 12:00 pm to 5:00 pm and Saturdays from 10:30 am to 4:00 pm. To schedule an
appointment stop by the Reference Desk at Johnston Public Library or call (515)
278-5233. For more information on the documents you should bring with you to
your tax appointment, visit AARP’s online document preparation checklist at http://www.aarp.org/money/taxes/info-01-2011/important-tax-documents.html.

If you’re feeling ambitious and tackle your own taxes every year, we also have free federal tax forms available at the library. The state of Iowa is no longer sending out state tax forms; however, we do have a link to IA tax forms on our website at www.johnstonlibrary.com that you can download and print from your home computer or from our computers here at the library.
