As the school year winds down, at Johnston Public Library we are gearing up for our busiest and most exciting time of the year: Summer Reading. Summer reading is an enjoyable time for people of all ages to read great books, participate in excellent free programs, and get rewarded with cool prizes; this year’s theme involves nighttime fun for everyone. Here are some details on 2012 Summer Reading Programs for book lovers of all ages:
Children’s Program: Dream Big-READ!
Follow your dreams this summer at the Johnston Public Library! We have two exciting Summer Reading programs for kids; one for future readers where parents or friends can read to children, and one for independent readers. Along with signing up for reading logs and earning exciting prizes, the summer is jam-packed with cool, can’t-miss programming for kids including a craft day on May 23, a Summer Reading kickoff concert on May 30th featuring kids music from Des Moines favorite, The Nadas, a Jammy Dance program with children’s book author Rebecca Janni on June 4, a Mad Science program on July 12, Blank Park Zoo program on July 16, our summer finale with comedy magician Jonathan May on July 24, and so much more. Registration for Summer Reading begins May 21 and the last day to turn in Summer Reading logs is July 21. Teen Program: Own the Night
This club is for students entering sixth grade and up. Read books, magazines, newspapers, or graphic novels, listen to audio books or music recordings, watch movies based on books, or attend teen library programs and earn points to win cool prizes like I-Cubs ticks, books, Van Dee’s ice cream, and even a Barnes and Noble gift card. Mark your calendars now—we have fun teen programming throughout the summer including MuVCHAT: Star Wars on May 29 where you watch Star Wars: A New Hope and then text your comments to the big screen from your phone, a video game tournament on June 8, a creative writing workshop facilitated by YA author Wendy Delsol on June 19, and a t-shirt transformation and sophisticated shrinky dinks craft program on July 10. Adult Program: Between the Covers
Summer Reading fun isn’t just for kids. Adults—sign up for your own Summer Reading Program here at the library. Complete a book log, fill out book reviews, and try your hand at book and music trivia for chances to win prizes. Sign up begins May 21, 2012. The last day to turn in book logs, book reviews, and quizzes is July 31 and the summer fun culminates with Johnston’s annual Jazz in July Concert at the Johnston Commons area outside the library on July 22nd from 6:00 to 8:30 pm. This year’s band is the Fred Gazzo Band, a local favorite featuring rat pack style music. Bring a blanket and lawn chairs and come relax with friends and family at the library.
