Yard Waste Collection Begins April 1

Yard Waste Collection Begins April 1

Use a Cart, Bags, Stickers, or All Three This Season

2013 Compost It! Season:  April 1 through Nov. 30
* Des Moines offers year-round service.

Through the Compost It! program, yard waste is collected weekly from your curb on the same day as garbage pick-up. Grass clippings, leaves, garden waste and brush can all be recycled through the program.

Two Options

Bag & Sticker Program
There are two options for the Bag & Sticker program. Purchase our Compost It! bags, which cover the cost of collection. Or purchase the green Compost It! stickers and affix to store-brand bags and brush bundles. Learn where you can purchase bags and stickers in your neighborhood.

Cart Service
The Cart Service is an optional subscription service in participating communities. Residents can have the convenience of using a 96-gallon wheeled cart. Call your City Hall to enroll in the program. Renewal is made simple by purchasing a sticker annually to attach to the cart. The cart holds more than three bags of yard waste. If a resident has more yard debris than cart capacity some weeks, then the Bag & Sticker program can be used for the additional waste.

Compost It! Recycling Yard Waste into Compost
The Iowa State Legislature banned yard waste from Iowa’s landfills. In 1991, it became illegal to throw grass clippings and other yard debris in the trash. The Compost It! program helps Central Iowa comply with the new and recycle the waste into compost, a viable product.
