• Smitherman stays the course (timesrepublican.com) — Marshalltown High School hurdler Aiden Smitherman capped his Bobcat career with a big personal record in the 400-meter hurdles at the state meet, moving up from 22nd seed to 15th. The Bobcats’ distance medley relay, featuring several Marshalltown seniors, also competed but finished off their seed time. Teammate Preston Johnson still has the 1,600 meters ahead on Saturday.

• MCC staff reflects on artful year (timesrepublican.com) — Marshalltown Community College students and faculty have spent the past year transforming their campus with collaborative, student-designed metal sculptures like “It’s Why You’re Here” and “Abundance.” Multiple departments, from art and welding to construction and biology, joined forces so coursework produced permanent public art now brightening outdoor spaces for students and visitors every day.

• Man convicted of second-degree murder in 2024 Marshalltown shootings (kcci.com) — A Marshalltown shooting case from 2024 has resulted in a second-degree murder conviction for Ilias Lasley in the death of Frances Gasca, while he was acquitted in the death of Mario Murillo. Investigators say the victims were speaking Spanish outside a Marshalltown home when shots were fired. Sentencing is set for July 10, with potential prison time ahead.
