• Two Mason City healthcare workers fired for allegedly violating patient privacy laws (kgloam.com) — Two former employees of a Mason City healthcare provider were denied unemployment benefits after an administrative law judge found they committed workplace misconduct involving patient privacy. One ex-worker at MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center allegedly accessed a co-worker’s records, while another allegedly recorded a patient and staff on a work phone, with both rulings recently finalized. 
• Mason City man pleads guilty to federal meth, firearm charges (kcrg.com) — A 47-year-old man from Mason City has pleaded guilty in federal court to conspiring to distribute meth and possessing a firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking. Prosecutors say he helped move large quantities of meth from Iowa toward South Dakota, and he now faces at least 20 years in prison, with sentencing to be scheduled later.
• Iowa legislature passes bill requiring radon mitigation in new homes (kttc.com) — A new Iowa bill headed to the governor would require radon mitigation systems in all newly built single- and two-family homes, and Mason City’s mayor John Lee strongly supports it. He says adding mitigation during construction should be far cheaper for future Mason City homebuyers and shouldn’t slow local housing developments, even as the city works to ease its housing shortage.
