• Summer reading camp returns to Mount Vernon (mvlsun.com) — Families in Mount Vernon can look forward to a free, screen-free Summer Reading Camp that pairs elementary students with local volunteers for a week of literacy games, buddy reading, and outdoor activities. Inspired by a long-running Cedar Rapids program, the camp now uses Cornell College’s campus and the local library to fight summer learning loss, build friendships, and spark a lasting love of books. 
• Mustangs beat Alburnett, Fort Dodge (mvlsun.com) — Mount Vernon’s fourth-ranked Class 3A softball team is on a tear, racking up big wins over Alburnett, Fort Dodge, Vinton-Shellsburg, Benton Community, and Pleasant Valley while improving to 27–5 overall and 14–2 in the WaMaC East. Led by standout pitcher-slugger Hayden Gookin and a deep lineup, the Mustangs strengthened their schedule and now hold a four-game division lead.
• UMCMV awards Julian Johnston scholarships (mvlsun.com) — Four college students with ties to the area have each received $750 Julian Johnston Scholarships from the United Methodist Church of Mount Vernon’s Memorial Committee for the 2026–27 school year. The award honors Julian E. Johnston, a longtime Mount Vernon businessman who created the fund in gratitude for support he received as a Cornell College student in the 1930s.
