Owners John and Mary Curiel say demand is so strong they’re turning people away, and winning would mean more workshops, better accessibility, and even more arts-driven foot traffic for Newton’s downtown businesses. 
• Elementary buildings $100K offer draws second wave of comments and concerns at hearing (newtondailynews.com) — Newton residents are sharply divided over a $100,000 proposal to buy the closed Woodrow Wilson and Emerson Hough elementary buildings, gifting one to Newton Christian School and turning the other over to the YMCA for childcare. Supporters see a low-risk way to repurpose vacant schools and boost community services, while opponents urge the school board to slow down, explore alternatives, and reconsider transferring public property to a private school.
• Schools invited to apply for official designation supporting Iowa military-connected students (iowa.gov) — Iowa schools, including those in Newton, are now invited to apply for the 2026–27 Iowa Purple Star School designation, which recognizes strong support for military-connected students. Newton’s district was among the inaugural honorees last year, and local schools can again qualify by appointing a military liaison, offering targeted programs, and maintaining resources for military families before the Dec. 31 deadline.
