1. Morningside University and Sioux City Career Academy launch program to help students (ktiv.com) — High schoolers in Sioux City now have a new way to jump-start careers in education and nursing through the Siouxland Start program from Morningside University and Sioux City Career Academy. Students can earn dual credit with hybrid college courses, gain hands-on experience in local schools and Morningside’s Simulation Lab, and build in-demand skills while still in high school.

2. Arbor Day Tree Planting (kscj.com) — Sioux City residents are invited to an Arbor Day tree planting and press conference on Friday, April 24, at 10 a.m. at City Hall, followed by planting at Chris Larsen Park Boat Ramp. The Parks and Recreation Department will highlight how trees cut energy costs, boost property values, and improve local air quality while celebrating this long-running conservation tradition.

3. Sioux City man involved in pursuit sentenced to federal prison on firearm charge (kcrg.com) — A Sioux City-area man has been sentenced to 10 years in federal prison after a 2024 vehicle pursuit that wound through multiple Sioux City streets and ended near Broken Kettle Road. Officers later linked a discarded firearm to him through fingerprint testing, and he will also serve three years of supervised release with no possibility of federal parole.

4. Siouxland nonprofit mobilizes to help Tanzania flood victims rebuild (ktiv.com) — A Siouxland nonprofit is asking Sioux City residents to help pack 20,000 meals for Tanzanian flood victims this Sunday, April 26, at Sunnybrook Community Church. STEMM hopes to raise $10,000 for food and to rebuild 30 to 40 homes, with additional support coming from a May 29 fundraiser concert in Bronson.

How northwest Iowans are supporting immigrants living in the shadow of ICE (iowapublicradio.org) — Sioux City organizers and faith leaders are quietly building support networks for immigrants who fear stepped-up ICE enforcement, including hotlines, rapid-response training, and twice-monthly solidarity meetings. Activists like Manape LaMere and Pastor Bret Myers are teaching nonviolent tactics, offering material aid, and stressing that vulnerable families here will have people to rely on if raids intensify.
