What is Pb? And Why Should I Recycle 5-15 Pounds of It?

Pb is more commonly known as lead and is No. 82 on the Periodic Table of eEements (a heavy metal). 

Lead has long been used in many household items, but it has some very negative health hazards.  It was banned from paint in 1978 because of its impact on negative childhood development. 

Today 5-15 lbs of lead can be found in your computer monitor (CRT).  The lead is used in the glass panels and within the soldering of the circuit panels. 

As Urbandale's Spring Clean Up approaches, don't toss your old computer monitor to the curb.  Instead recycle it and save that 5-15 lbs of lead from entering the landfill. 

You have several options to recycle your old computer monitors:

• A free option is to donate them to .  Goodwill partners with Dell to recycle old computer electronics, with Goodwill receiving a portion of the profits from sold recycled material.
• You can also recycle your items at the Metro Waste Authority's Hazardous Waste facility (www.mwatoday.com). 
• Several private companies in the metro area recycle old computer monitors, such as A-Tech Recycling and CP Recovery.
