[VIDEO] Kosama Comes To Waukee

Kosama fitness centers are popping up all over Iowa and the Midwest. Construction is currently underway at 70 Laurel St. for Waukee's only location.

Fitness fanatics rejoice - Kosama is coming to Waukee.

The newest metro location next to Mickey's Irish Pub and Grill at 70 Laurel St. will be the largest Kosama in the area, topping out at 5,000-square-feet. It’s scheduled to open September 12.

"We’re really, really excited about (it)," said Justin Aarsvold, general manager at Kosama Waukee. "Knowing that it's such a growing and active community of people that like to really be fit, is exciting. We think Waukee could be one of our best locations.”

The Kosama fitness program is an eight-week commitment to change. It incorporates six different training methods including plyometrics, kettlebells, yoga, kickboxing, as well as upper and lower body resistance training.

Kosama co-founder and CEO Kory Pohlman, who makes up the K and the O in the brand’s name, founded the company with his wife Sarah McDougal (S and the A) and long-time friend Matt Braet (M and the A) in April 2010. Just 18 months later, the trio has 22 locations with more in the works.

Pohlman, a chiropractor, says he started the company with the simple idea of helping people in mind.

"I wanted to create a solution, hold people accountable, help them lose weight, get their strength back, range of motion back and their endurance back," Pohlman said. "It started off in my former clinic. We just started enrolling people and it just kind of blew up to what it is now."

Word has traveled fast about the results Kosama produces. Vathana Pak heard about the eight-week program through a co-worker and signed up.

"When we first started they told us it wouldn't be more so much about losing weight, but gaining muscle," Pak said. "I still ended up losing 15 pounds."

According to Pak, the positive attitude of the trainers is a real plus.

"It's more like a personal setting and the coaches there really encourage you to be in there and in class," Pak said. "They're always cheering you on and if you do something wrong, they're never negative about it."

The cost for an eight-week session is $349. The Waukee location will be open a few days prior to September 12 so potential members can see what Kosama is all about.

"All it takes is for people to come in and try it out,” said Aarsvold. “Touch base with us, shoot us an e-mail and come out and try a class or come for a week for free and see if it's for you."
