The council has approved a second reading, backed by the police chief, with potential fines up to $855 if a final vote passes.
   

• Waukee 14-year-old talks love of barbecue at Iowa State Fair cookout (desmoinesregister.com subscription) — A Waukee teenager who spent nearly two years in the hospital is now chasing her barbecue dreams at the Iowa State Fair's big cookout contest. Fourteen-year-old Ava Weitl, fresh off a heart transplant and years of health challenges, competed in youth and showmanship divisions with flamingo-themed flair and pork chops honoring a close caregiver, and she's already planning her return.
   

• IGHSAU Releases First Volleyball Rankings (westerniowatoday.com) — State volleyball preseason rankings are out, and both Waukee Northwest and Waukee High crack the Class 5A top 15, giving local fans plenty to watch this season. Northwest opens at No. 1 after a 38-1 year, while Waukee comes in at No. 12 following a strong 25-8 campaign.
