National no-kill expert to speak in central Iowa
Central Iowa's animal lovers are invited to learn from national no-kill expert Nathan Winograd how we can save even more pets.
DES MOINES, Iowa — The father of the United States’ no-kill movement is coming to Des Moines, and you can hear his message at no cost.
Nathan Winograd, the founder of the national No Kill Advocacy Center, built our country’s first no-kill community in Tompkins County, New York. Since then, he has taught communities across the U.S. — including West Des Moines, Clive, and Urbandale, served by Furry Friends Refuge animal shelter — how to successfully implement the no-kill equation.
His movie “Redemption” will be shown at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 8, at the Varsity Theatre, 1207 25th St. in Des Moines. After the film, which tells the story of the no-kill movement, Winograd will discuss how individual animal lovers can take action to end unnecessary killing. The event ends at noon.

Admission is free and open to the public, but reservations are required. In recognition of Furry Friends’ success in reducing animal euthanasia, Winograd will give attendees a DVD of “Redemption” if they donate $10 to the shelter.
Reserve your seat online so you, too, can be a superhero for shelter pets and help prevent their deaths.

Furry Friends Refuge is a nonprofit humane organization serving the animals of West Des Moines, Urbandale, and Clive. The volunteer-supported group has built and maintained no-kill communities — meaning a live-release rate of well over 90 percent — in those municipalities for the past two years. It cares for 150 to 250 animals per day, on average, at its locations in West Des Moines and downtown Des Moines.
