No Sweat Tips for a Green Super Bowl Party

Your Super Bowl party doesn't have to produce super amounts of trash. Tips for hosting a green event.

The big game can produce some big-time trash. Don’t sweat it with these tips for throwing a green Super Bowl party.

Include Reusables in your Starting Lineup

Instead of using disposable plates, cups and utensils, opt for using what’s already in your cupboards. It’s the perfect time to get out those fun, frosty mugs or pilsner glasses that have been collecting dust. If you do purchase disposable items, make a conscious effort to buy paper products made from recycled materials.

Think Green Screen

According to fatwallet.com, 17 percent of consumers will buy a new television during a Super Bowl sale this year. If a new big screen is in your pre-game plan, go green by purchasing an energy efficient TV. How you get rid of your old TV is also important. It can be as easy as checking with the store you bought it from, since some offer a trade-in service. There are also a variety of local businesses that accept TVs, or you can take it to Metro Hazardous Waste Drop Off or Metro Park East Landfill where they are recycled for a fee based on size, ranging between $15-25. Most local charities no longer accept old televisions, even if they are working.

Post-Game Cleanup

Stay true to your green spirit all the way to the final whistle with reusable towels, rather than paper towels or disposable wipes to cleanup. Don’t forget to send leftovers home with your friends so extra food doesn’t go to waste and save those party decorations for next year.
