One arrested, another sought by police after shooting of 14-year-old in north Wichita (kansas.com) — Wichita police arrested an 18-year-old and are seeking another after a 14-year-old boy was shot in the shoulder Friday evening in the 2600 block of North Park Place. The teen has been treated and released, and investigators are asking anyone with information to contact WPD Investigations or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers.
   

2. Wichita NAACP Announces 2026 Freedom Fund Honorees (communityvoiceks.com) — Wichita residents can celebrate local civil rights, education, health, arts, and community leaders at the NAACP Freedom Fund Awards and Banquet on Oct. 3 at the Wichita Marriott. Honorees include longtime educators, health professionals, artists, and organizations like Union Rescue Mission and Jackson Mortuary, with tickets available for $75 through the Wichita NAACP website.
   

3. KDHE unveils plan to clean up contaminated groundwater near 29th and Grove (kwch.com) — If you live near 29th and Grove in Wichita, state and city officials are moving ahead with a long-awaited plan to pump, clean, and reinject contaminated groundwater linked to a decades-old chemical spill. KDHE is taking bids to build the cleanup system, Union Pacific hopes construction starts in 2027, and residents can already sign up online for free testing for TCE exposure.
   

4. Haysville man with ankle monitor was found with half a pound of meth; he's sentenced (kansas.com) — A Haysville man has been sentenced to 14 years in prison after Kansas Highway Patrol troopers stopped him near Hemlock Avenue and Hemlock Place in south Wichita and found over half a pound of high-purity meth. The case, involving an offender already on an ankle monitor, underscores ongoing drug trafficking concerns in the Wichita area and the stiff federal penalties that can follow.
   

5. Wichita Wind Surge finish season, prepare to rebrand as Turbo Tubs (kwch.com) — Wichita baseball fans just watched the final game of the Wind Surge era at Equity Bank Park, closing the 2026 season with a 10-8 loss and a 55-81 record. Next year, the city's Double-A team will return rebranded as the Wichita Turbo Tubs, with new uniforms, logos, merchandise, and a refreshed mascot experience debuting in April 2027.
