The State Will Not Require UK To Make Budget Cuts For Remainder Of The Fiscal Year

On Friday, Nov. 6, University of Kentucky President Eli Capilouto updated the UK community on the school's budget situation. Please see the message below.

Dear Campus Community,

Gov. Andy Beshear announced this week that the state does not anticipate the need for budget reductions for the rest of this fiscal year, which ends June 30.

Earlier this year, universities were asked to prepare for potential mid-year cuts of 8 percent — about $21 million from the $260 million we are receiving this year from the Commonwealth. I want to thank Gov. Beshear and policymakers for their continued support for education.

The welcome news, however, should remind us of the continued budgetary challenges we face and of the thoughtful planning that must continue. At each step of that process, I will provide you with a clear and candid assessment of where we are.

I know the strain and stress for our faculty and staff and for our students and their families continues to mount. And I know that happens even as so much is still so unknown. With each day, though, my faith in this place and its remarkable people is renewed. We will get through this — one step at a time, one day at a time, working together.
