Here are the top stories in New Orleans today:

  1. Over $133 million in unpaid dues is currently owed to the Sewage and Water Board. The inspector general is now investigating the situation, which is thought to be caused by incorrect bills and dishonest employees. It has been confirmed that two former employees of the S&WB had been adjusting their bills for their own accounts. (WDSU New Orleans)
  2. Court documents show that former New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin, who was convicted of bribery in 2014, has been ordered to pay higher restitution payments. He claimed to be living on a tight budget and has been paying $500 a month since he was released from prison, though court records show he is making more than implied. Nagin is acting as his own lawyer to fight any increased payments, but a judge had ordered that he pay $1,200 a month. (WDSU New Orleans)
  3. Two people were shot overnight Wednesday in New Orleans. The first victim was grazed by a bullet just before 9:30 p.m. on North Villere Street. The second victim was a man who was shot on Rhodes Drive on Thursday at 2:13 a.m. Despite these two instances of gun violence, crime tracking date appears to show that crime has been trending downward in 2023, according to the mayor.
